Determined to not only track down the crazed criminal of the title but every other crook in Cleveland, Ness must struggle against not only the criminal element but his own inner weaknesses. Make no mistake, Ness is no comic book superhero and Tucker doesn't shy away from portraying the iconic detective as a flawed human being, albeit a stalwart one. Tucker's Ness struggles to find time for his marriage and seems unhealthily driven to find Cleveland's serial killer as though it were a personal matter. He drinks and smokes too much and at times gives in to an impulsiveness that a veteran officer should be beyond. Moreover, he seems haunted by old memories and unable to move beyond the past, so that at times Ness seems pitted not merely against the Cleveland murderer but a phantom amalgamation of every malcontent he's ever known. But for all that, Ness is never unlikable, and the reader hopes that not only can Ness apprehend the killer but somehow overcome the diabolic evil that seems to have invaded his mind and spirit as well.
Stylistically, Tucker is a brilliant writer. He captures the atmosphere of a bygone era with ease and makes not only Ness but all the other characters and city of Cleveland itself come to life. The narrative moves quickly and with assurance--not surprising since Tucker has written previously about Eliot Ness and has an extensive body of factual knowledge upon which to draw for the sake of the novel. It is perhaps worth noting that while Mr. Tucker has written horror stories before, THE FAMILIAR COMPOUND TRICKSTER seems a bit darker and more vicious in some ways than his previous efforts in the area. Perhaps the author felt that this time around the villain he was writing about was evil of an unusually profound type--much like Eliot Ness.
Fans of Mr. Tucker will find THE FAMILIAR COMPOUND TRICKSTER to be as well-written as the writer's many previous works of excellence, and new readers will, I think, enjoy discovering an author of exceptional literary insight. Either way, this is a suspenseful, at times terrifying, and never boring saga of the evil that sometimes invades planet Earth and the good men, however flawed, who rise to the challenge of bringing them to justice. Highly recommended.

There is only one thing I require of a work of fiction It keeps me turning the pages. "Ness's Most Dangerous Enemy" did that
Some works offer a bonus They tell me something about a world I know little or nothing about "Ness's Most Dangerous Enemy" also did that.
All I knew about Eliot Ness was that part of his life in Chicago when he helped put Al Capone in prison (as recorded in Ness's own book, "The Untouchables.")
I had only a vague idea that Ness had a second life as the Director of Public Safety in Cleveland, where his marriage fell apart as he obsessively pursued a serial killer, a maniac who dismembered his victims and spread their body parts around Cleveland. That's what this book is about.
The author, Ken Tucker, calls his book a work of fiction. That's because Tucker filled in the unrecorded parts of Ness's pursuit of the killer the thoughts that might have been going through Ness's mind and conversations that he might have had.
This is not to say that Tucker's work is devoid of authenticity. The author seems to have done a ton of research into the background of Ness, his wives, Cleveland, and the criminology of the time (including a scene that describes the early use of a lie detector). The language even sometimes reflects the idioms and popular culture of America in the 1930s.
I won't spoil your fun by giving away too much more of the novel. Buy it. I think you'll like it a lot.
